(Undated) — The Sahara dust plume reaches U.S. shores. The dust plume from the Sahara desert made its way across the Atlantic starting last weekend and has now arrived in the Gulf of Mexico and portions of the Southeast. There were reports yesterday of evidence of the Saharan dust plume in the skies from Atlanta, the Florida Panhandle, New Orleans and as far south as Galveston and Corpus Christi. The National Weather Service says the Saharan dust leaves the sky whiter looking during the day with redder sunsets and diminished air quality.
The National Weather Service in St. Louis says that while most concentrated amounts will remain to our southeast, reduced visibility and air quality is possible. The NWS adds that dust may also stick to surfaces if rain pulls it down from the sky. They also add that the hazy sky should make for great sunrise and sunset photos. The dust would look to be of whatever impact to our area over this weekend.
