(Doha, Qatar) — Muslims around the world are celebrating Eid al-Fitr today. Celebrations are different this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Al Jazeera says many Muslim-majority countries like Turkey, Qatar and Indonesia have suspended celebrations because of the lockdown. In Saudi Arabia, mosques will be broadcasting the call to prayers, but no worshipers will be allowed to attend, with people being told to perform the prayers at home. Many Muslims are expected to participate in virtual Eid al-Fitr activities, such as social media celebrations and online concerts.

(Window Rock, AZ) — The Navajo Nation is on extreme lockdown in an effort to get the coronavirus spike within tribal ranks under control. All Navajo communities located near the Four Corners region of northern Arizona, southeastern Utah and northwestern New Mexico are on a 57-hour long lockdown until Monday at 5:00-a.m. Everyone except first responders and a small number of other essential workers and businesses must remain at home. Even stores are closed. Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez says his nation has the highest number of confirmed cases per capita than any other U.S. state.

(Undated) — Millions of Americans in the Central U.S. will be impacted by severe weather this Memorial Day Weekend. Heavy thunderstorms are forecast across the Central Plains, with downpours, hail and damaging winds expected today from South Dakota to Central Texas. Forecasters are also warning of flash flooding. Stormy weather will continue in the Midwest and Southern Plains on Memorial Day.

(Hong Kong) — Police are resorting to the use of tear gas to quash a political protest rally in Hong Kong. Thousands of protesters carrying signs marched today in the city’s streets to show their opposition to a new security law the Communist Chinese mainland government intends to impose on the city. Hong Kong’s government will be bypassed in order for the new security measures to be mandated. China’s government made the announcement about the anti-sedition security law on Thursday.

(Atlanta, GA) — A new public health report says rodent populations are starting to branch out in some areas because restaurant dumpsters are empty. The public health risk is part of a statement reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It says the effect of the coronavirus shutdown of restaurants on rodent populations is leading the rats to venture into neighborhoods to seek out food elsewhere. The report recommends making sure all entrances to residences and commercial buildings are sealed and garbage is disposed of properly to keep rodents away and from spreading disease to humans.
