An outbreak of severe storms will strike the area this evening and tonight.
Our weather forecast for today calls for gradually clearing skies with a high of 80. Winds will gust out of the south at better than 40 miles per hour today. Tonight we will see storms—severe storms will hit—with a low of 58. Winds from the south tonight will gust better than 45 miles per hour.
In their latest weather briefing, the National Weather Service in St. Louis says a line of severe storms will move up to 70 miles per hour from west to east across the area this evening and tonight. These storms will not be over any location for very long. The primary threat from these storms will be significant wind damage with gusts over 80 miles per hour. Strong tornadoes along with large hail is also possible with tonight’s storms. The NWS adds that confident is high that wind damage will be the main hazard with this line of storms. Tornadoes, some potentially strong, will be possible with this line. They also add the amount of thunderstorm energy available for this system has increased, which has increased their confidence in the likelihood in an outbreak of severe weather later today and this evening.
As for timing, it currently looks like the storms will starting in central Missouri between 5 pm and 7 pm and make their way to the east, potentially arriving to our area between 9 pm and 11 pm tonight. That time could still be adjusted as the National Weather Service gathers more information.
