Legislation in Indiana would create a commission to take in the Illinois counties that have voted to secede from the Land of Lincoln. Last election, seven more Illinois counties joined 26 others–including Fayette County–to greenlight a proposal to explore splitting from the state. Indiana House Speaker Todd Huston says they are excited about having that conversation this year.
The measure would create the Indiana-Illinois Boundary Adjustment Commission. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker isn’t buying it.
Illinois counties do have the power to secede, and such a move would require approval from the Illinois General Assembly and U.S. Congress.
