Former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan has taken the stand at his public corruption trial in Chicago.
The courtroom crowd grew quickly when defense attorney Dan Collins called Madigan to testify Tuesday afternoon. The former speaker described his upbringing in Chicago and going to the University of Notre Dame.
In a call recorded November 14, 2017, codefendant Michael McClain told then-Chicago Alderman Daniel Solis not to watch a Notre Dame game with Madigan.
On September 4, 2018, Madigan expressed confidence in his private law firm.
Madigan testified public officials and others would ask him for help finding a job as often as once a week.
Collins asked Madigan about legislation related to utility companies, which are at the heart of the government’s case. Cross-examination may begin Wednesday.
