The dedication for the new Veteran’s Memorial Park in downtown Vandalia is set for Veteran’s Day
The City of Vandalia and the Vandalia American Legion announced the dedication ceremony will be held for the new Veteran’s Memorial Park in downtown Vandalia on Monday, November 11th at 10:30 am. Mayor Rick Gottman, Post 95 Commander Bruce Braswell, State Senator Jason Plummer and State Representative Blaine Wilhour are all slated to speak during the ceremony on Monday.
During Monday’s Vandalia City Council meeting, Mayor Gottman said they are planning to start setting the monuments on Wednesday of this week in the Park, which will be in the vacant lot across from Vandalia City Hall on Gallatin Street. The funding for the memorial stones is from the American Legion. But, Alderman Bob Bowen did ask Mayor Gottman for a total amount of cost for the city.
Mayor Gottman said they are planning to have sod laid at the park ahead of the event. The total cost of having that performed would be just under $5,000. During the meeting, City Administrator LaTisha Paslay, Alderman Andy Lester and developer Dennis Grubaugh all donated $1,000 towards the cost of the sod. Also, Lester asked about lighting for the Park.
Mayor Gottman added that ADS Electric has donated their time for setting up the lighting for the park. He also added the memorial stones will have all the names that was on the previous Memorial Wall for the American Legion. But, the names are now engraved in black granite.
Also, Mayor Gottman encouraged other individuals and businesses to step up with donations for various parts of the Veteran’s Memorial Park.
To make a donation, you can contact Vandalia City Hall to get it set up.
