Illinoisans will weigh in on a property tax advisory question during the November General Election.
An advisory question on whether Illinois should enact a millionaire’s tax to address high property taxes is being discredited by a policy think tank. The question asks: “Should the Illinois Constitution be amended to create an additional 3 percent tax on income greater than $1 million for the purpose of dedicating funds raised for property tax relief?”
That is Dylan Sharkey from the Illinois Policy Institute. He says if Illinois enacted such a tax, the state’s wealthiest people would leave. Sharkey says if you want to address high property taxes, then go to the source……unfunded pension liabilities.
Sharkey fears that advisory questions may be used by Illinois lawmakers as justification for enacting future laws and taxes.
