Law enforcement in Fayette County performed sex offender compliance checks this week.
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office says that on Wednesday they joined with the Vandalia Police Department, St. Elmo Police Department, Farina Police Department, Illinois State Police, Illinois Attorney General’s Office, and the United States Marshal Service to conduct their annual Sex Offender Compliance Checks on registered offenders in the Fayette County Area.
The release from the Sheriff’s Office says that any convicted sex offender in the State of Illinois is required by law to register as such within the jurisdiction that they reside. Registered sex offenders are also required to register quarterly or annually or for a predetermined period, or for life depending on the severity of the charge the offender was convicted for. These offenders are also legally required to provide certain information for their registration and keep it up to date with current accurate information.
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office says these checks are conducted annually to verify that all sex offenders registered in Fayette County are following the law an continue to comply according to the Illinois Sex Offender Registration Act. Fayette County Sheriff Ronnie Stevens says they will continue to conduct these checks as it is one of the many ways they can continue to keep the citizens of Fayette County safe.
