The Fayette County Board has increased the salary for the Coroner’s position. But, not as much as originally requested.
At the Fayette County Board meeting on Tuesday, the board addressed the request for an increase from the current salary for the Coroner of $31,671 per year to a requested amount of $55,000 per year. Fayette County State’s Attorney Brenda Mathis told the board that for taxing purposes it would be better to increase the salary by a gradual amount over a number of years. After quite a bit of discussion on the issue by the board, the motion was made to increase the Coroner’s salary to $55,000 over a three year period. That measure failed by an 8 to 3 vote with board members Glenda Bartels, Michael Butts, Merrell Collins, Jacob Harris, Doug Knebel, Mack Payne, James Wehrle and Joe Wills voting No and Pat Click, Scott Ray and Ryan Tompkins voting Yes. After some further discussion, board member Doug Knebel made the motion to increase the Coroner’s salary $2,250 per year for 4 years. That motion was approved by an 8 to 3 vote with Bartels, Butts, Collins, Knebel, Payne, Tompkins, Wehrle and Wills voting Yes and Click, Harris and Ray voting No.
The Coroner’s Salary Each Year will be:
December 1st, 2024 $33,921
December 1st, 2025 $36,171
December 1st, 2026 $38,421
December 1st, 2027 $40,671
Current Coroner David Harris is running for re-election in November. As of this time, it would appear he will be unopposed for another term.
