Two Decatur men are facing multiple Felony Charges in Fayette County Court after an early Monday morning traffic stop.
Vandalia Police Reports say that about 3 am on Monday morning, a Vandalia Police Officer conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of U.S. Route 51 and Thrill Hill Road. The Officer says in the report that while patrolling the area of Kennedy Boulevard, he began to follow the vehicle while it was traveling north. The Officer says in the report that observed the vehicle sway to the right, crossing the white painted line. He continued behind the vehicle through the construction zone on Kennedy and observed the vehicle sway to the right again, crossing the white painted line. The Officer he followed behind and then activated his emergency lights and the vehicle came to a stop. The driver of the vehicle was identified as 43 year old Marcus T. Taylor and the passenger was 36 year old Cortevis J. Taylor, both of Decatur.
In the report, The Officer says he asked Marcus, the driver, if there was anything illegal in the vehicle and Marcus says there was not. The Officer says he asked for consent to search the vehicle, but Marcus denied consent. The Officer says he then questioned the passenger Cortevis if there was anything illegal in the vehicle. Cortevis said there was not. The Officer said he informed Cortevis he could detect an odor of green cannabis coming from the vehicle, and Cortevis then said he believed there was a blunt in the vehicle. The Officer then requested Cortevis step out of the vehicle. The Officer says in the report that Cortevis initially complied, partially exiting the vehicle. However, the Officer then says Cortevis began frantically reaching within the vehicle. Cortevis then grabbed a black item out of the center console, and turned driving his shoulder into the Officer’s torso. The Officer says in the report he turned and attempted to grab Cortevis as he took off running toward the field line. The Officer said began grabbing Cortevis and attempting to pull him to the ground, however he says in the report Cortevis kept running and attempting to push the Officer off of him. The Officer says in the report Cortevis swung his arm backwards pushing the Officer away and striking him in the face. At this time, Cortevis fell and dropped the black item. The Officer says that then got back onto his feet and drew his department issued taser and pointed it at Cortevis and discharged it twice, striking him. The Officer says in the report that Cortevis locked up and fell to the ground, striking the barbed wire fence at the edge of the field. The Officer says in the report that he jumped onto Cortevis at this time and ordered him to lay down on the ground but he says Cortevis refused, continuing to resist, and attempting to buck the Officer off of him. Cortevis resisted for another short moment however he later complied, placing his hands behind his back. The Officer says in the report—after securing Cortevis—he retrieved the black item Cortevis had dropped and observed the items to be ball shaped wrapped in black duct tape with orange/black tablets spilling out of the corner. The Officer says a probable cause search of the vehicle was conducted. The Officer says a clear wrapped bag containing 551.4 grams of cannabis and a clear wrapped bag containing 535.9 grams of cannabis were found in a croc pot box in the trunk of the vehicle.
