South Central High School grad and current Greenville University pitcher Sydnee Garrett has been named the National Christian College Athletic Association’s Pitcher of the Year. The junior is in her first year for the Panthers after completing her first two collegiate seasons at Kaskaskia College and has accumulated a record of 14-2 in 19 games pitched, starting 16 of them and tossing a complete game 12 times with three shutouts so far this season. Garrett has given up just 32 walks and 73 hits in her 98.2 innings pitched with 61 hits being singles, 10 being doubles and just one triple and one home run given up. Garrett has also been getting things done at the plate as well with a .369 batting average with 41 hits in her 111 at bats, 13 of her hits being for doubles and nine for home runs as she has racked up 22 runs scored and 36 RBI.
Garrett is part of a Panthers team that went 31-7 over their regular season which wrapped up on Saturday. Of their 31 wins, GU went unbeaten at home with a 16-0 record, compiled an 11-5 record on the road and went 4-2 at neutral sites. The Panthers get their postseason underway on Thursday as GU is the #2 seed of the SLIAC Tournament and will take on #3 seed Webster in the Semifinals at Spalding University in Louisville. KY at 6:30pm. The winner of that game will take on the winner of the other semifinal between #1 Fontbonne and #4 Spalding. The Elimination Round games will be held on Friday with the Championship Round on Saturday.
