With the fall veto session approaching, a lawsuit abuse watchdog is urging Illinois lawmakers to use the time to fix the state’s Biometric Information Privacy Act, or BIPA. In February, the Illinois Supreme Court ruled that a claim accrues each time a private entity scans a person’s biometric identifier without their consent. The court also acknowledged that the current law is a potential business killer. Phil Melin is the executive director of Illinois Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse.
Melin added that it is a desperate situation for a lot of employers and small businesses in Illinois and it is time to put politics aside and fix BIPA during the upcoming veto session.
