Nearly 10-thousand school choice scholarship recipients and their families face uncertainty after Illinois lawmakers failed to extend the Invest in Kids program. The program, which grants tax credits to people who use private dollars to fund scholarships that allow students to attend private schools, is scheduled to sunset Dec. 31. Gov. J.B. Pritzker recently said the federal government should pay some of the costs of the program. Anthony Holter, president of Empower Illinois, says they are open to such an idea but only to a certain extent.
Holter is hopeful lawmakers will extend the program during the fall veto session. Opponents of the program argue that taxpayer dollars are diverted from public schools to private schools.
