Some area lawmakers are concerned about a bill introduced in the Illinois House on Friday.
The bill, which is House Bill 4135 and was filed by State Representative Edgar Gonzalez, Junior, says in the first paragraph “Amends the School Code. Provides that the State Board of Education may issue, refuse to issue, or revoke recognition for schools. Amends certain provisions of the School Code with respect to public health requirements issued by the Department of Public Health when a public health emergency is declared by the Governor. Allows the State Board to revoke recognition for schools that fail to comply with the public health requirements.” You can view the full bill information here https://www.ilga.gov/legislation/billstatus.asp?DocNum=4135&GAID=16&GA=102&DocTypeID=HB&LegID=136708&SessionID=110
State Representative Blaine Wilhour, on his Facebook page, shared a story on the bill and says “Hey local boards, why would they be reintroducing this bill is ISBE already has this authority?”
State Senator and gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey says on his Facebook page for his campaign for Governor that ” HB 4135 was filed tonight to take away local authority from school boards and give more tyrannical power to JB Pritzker and unelected bureaucrats.”
Senator Bailey adds there is a thought the bill could advance this week being they will be in Springfield for a special session on the legislative maps.
