Altamont baseball was handed its first loss of the season on Friday, falling to Effingham, 8-5, at home. The Hearts got out to a quick lead with five runs in the first inning to go up 5-0 but Altamont countered with a pair of first innings runs to make it 5-2. Effingham added on one run in the second, edging their lead out to 6-2. Altamont matched that effort with a run in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the Hearts lead to 6-3. Two more runs in the top of the fourth inning pushed Effingham’s lead out again to 8-3. After a pair of scoreless innings, Altamont broke through for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in a late comeback attempt to cut it to 8-5, but the effort was not enough as the Indians suffered the loss. The Indians are 4-1 on the season and will be at Central A&M this morning for a doubleheader starting at 10:00am.
