(Springfield, IL) — Illinois lawmakers are considering a mileage tax on drivers to help maintain state infrastructure. The Sun Times reports new proposed legislation would create a pilot program to explore the viability of establishing a “road usage charge.” The proposal is designed to offset a decrease in motor fuel tax funding as more and more electric vehicles hit the roads in Illinois. Oregon and Utah have already implemented similar programs.
