News Release from FCI Greenville—-
GREENVILLE, IL: On March 11, 2025, at approximately 8:15 a.m., Nathan Merdick Smith
was found having injuries consistent with a perceived altercation at the Federal Correctional Institution
(FCI) Greenville in Greenville, Illinois.
Responding employees initiated life-saving measures. Emergency medical services (EMS) were requested
while life-saving efforts continued. Mr. Smith was transported by EMS to a local hospital and subsequently
pronounced deceased by hospital personnel.
No employees were injured during the incident. One other incarcerated individual sustained an injury and
required outside treatment.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation was notified.
Mr. Smith was a 29-year-old male who was sentenced in the Western District of Missouri to an
aggregate 80-month sentence for Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine and Possession of
a Firearm in Furtherance of a Drug Trafficking Crime. He had been in custody at FCI Greenville since
March 18, 2021.
FCI Greenville is a medium security facility.
