Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is advising residents to avoid confusion about the federal government’s deadline to comply with its REAL ID mandate.
Giannoulias said the Federal ID Act was enacted in 2005 and was meant to take effect in 2008. He said May 7th of this year is a real deadline.
Libertarian Party of Illinois chair Jim Humay said there are privacy concerns about REAL ID.
Giannoulias reminded Illinoisans that they do not need REAL ID to drive a vehicle, and they can still fly domestically with a valid passport.
