Despite No Cash Bail in Illinois, the Fayette County Jail inmate population has remained much the same as before

Despite the SAFE-T Act bringing in No Cash Bail to Illinois, the inmate population at the Fayette County Jail has remained much the same as it was before the law went into effect.  Fayette County Sheriff Ronnie Stevens says they remained pretty steady with their inmate population.

The Fayette County Jail also houses federal inmates and Sheriff Stevens says there’s a simple reason why—they help pay a lot of bills.

As for the jail population, during 2024 it ranged from 34 to 54 with the lowest spots being in the winter months of January and December and the peak being in the spring and summer.  We will hear more from Sheriff Stevens coming up tomorrow.
