Robert Donald Kiel was born on January 08, 1934, in Murphysboro, IL, the son of William “Dutch” and Minnie (Baskin) Kiel. He married Helen Frances Schoenberger on July 23, 1960; together they celebrated nearly 65 years of marriage.
Bob served his country proudly in the United States Air Force from July 23, 1952 to July 22, 1956.
He was then employed for over 30 years as an interviewer for the State of IL Dept. of Labor; Bob was a member of Mother of Dolors Catholic Church, the Honor Guard for American Legion Paul Stout Post #127, and Elk Lodge Post #572.
Bob was a voracious reader of all forms of print. He enjoyed having a well-rounded knowledge of most subjects, and had an opinion about things he had no business having an opinion about. He had an enviable shed and garden, and spent many hours dreaming of ways to keep the critters out. He loved hunting with his buddies in his younger years. As he got older, he joined the senior citizen center, where he enjoyed playing cards with his friends; many of the world’s problems were solved during those games.
He will forever be remembered by his wife, Helen Kiel of Vandalia; son, Robert S. Kiel (Elizabeth) of Murphysboro; daughter, Sallyann Shields (Joe) of Vandalia; grandchildren, Josh Shields (Dani), Matthew Kiel (Nataly), Emily Janssen (Aaron), Kate Campbell (Thomas), Elijah Kiel, and Johanna Shields; step-granddaughter, Brittney Pearson (David); great-grandchildren, Elliot, Camryn, and Kolt; and step great-granddaughter, Ember Pearson.
Mr. Kiel was preceded in death by his parents; son, Daniel Kiel; brother, William Kiel; twin brother, Richard Kiel; sisters, Wanda Applegath, Jo Moniger, and Lois Morgan; and great-granddaughter, Palmer Jo Janssen.
