We hear today from Fayette County Board Chairman Jacob Harris as he talks about the proposed new courthouse and jail project.
On Tuesday, the Fayette County Board’s Public Building Commission decided to go with a somewhat scaled back plan for the proposed new courthouse and jail, as compared to the original proposal. The one they are now moving forward with would be for an 80 bed jail and government center and would be 59,700 square feet with a projected cost of 44.3 million dollars. The funding mechanism would be a 1% increase in the county’s sales tax—which Fayette County voters will decide on during the April 1st Election.
Fayette County Board Chairman Jacob Harris says he knows people are not in favor of added taxes, but he believes this is a very needed project.
And, Harris says one concern is the Fayette County Jail and if new requirements could lead to them being restricted from housing inmates.
Fayette County is planning to work to get more information to the public about the project–including information on the county’s website and to-be-scheduled town hall meetings and open houses.
