If some Democratic lawmakers have their way, sex work in Illinois may no longer be illegal. Members of the Sex Worker Advisory Group, or SWAG, say legislation being introduced would implement the full decriminalization of sex work in Illinois. SWAG’s chair Reyna Ortiz, a former sex worker, says by passing this legislation, they will make Illinois a safer place for everyone.
The measure also establishes a sex workers bill of rights. The sponsor of the bill, State Representative Will Guzzardi, introduced a bill that passed the Illinois House last week that would replace the word prostitute with “person engaged in the sex trade.”
That piece of legislation is now headed to the Governor for is signature.
