Former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan has discussed “quid pro quo” and distanced himself from his codefendant at their corruption trial in Chicago.
Madigan said he developed a friendship with Michael McClain when they both served as state reps in the 1970’s, and that their friendship survived until recently.
Madigan appeared to be dismissive of McClain during cross examination with McClain defense attorney Patrick Cotter.
After hearing Chicago Alderman Daniel Solis use the words, “quid pro quo” during a call in 2017, Madigan said he met with Solis face-to-face to say he would not be involved.
Madigan and McClain are charged with bribery, racketeering and official misconduct.
Prosecutors may begin their cross-examination of Madigan on Monday.
