The Fayette County Board is looking at funding options for a new Courthouse and Jail.
A few different issues in regards to the potential new courthouse and jail were discussed during Tuesday’s monthly Fayette County Board meeting. One issue that was brought up was to see a further increase in solar projects for the county. Fayette County Board Chairman Jacob Harris explains.
Currently, the county has about 6,600 acres under lease for solar projects in the county and about 4,400 acres with permits for solar. The target amount of acreage to make enough money of solar to pay the portion for the courthouse project would be 8,292 acres. And, Vice Chairman Merrill Collins said during the meeting that is a doable amount with the projects that are currently being discussed. Meanwhile, the Fayette County Board also approved a real estate purchase agreement. Harris says this is to lock in the potential new location for a new courthouse.
Harris says that location is south of Auto Zone in Vandalia. He says it’s an “L” Shaped piece of property that could be the new location for the courthouse. More discussion on the matter is expected at a special meeting on Tuesday, November 26th.
