The new Telecommunications Center doesn’t look like the only current venture that will involve cooperation between Fayette County and the City of Vandalia.
During Tuesday’s Fayette County Board meeting, members were asked to consider a Merit Commission Board at the request of Fayette County Sheriff Ronnie Stevens. Sheriff Stevens says the work such as background checks and such would still be conducted and then the board would decide if a candidate was fit to be on the list. Sheriff Stevens says he would also like to run lateral applications through the merit board as well. The Sheriff says he would like to see the board mirror the Police Commission board of the City of Vandalia.
Vandalia Mayor Rick Gottman was on hand for the county board meeting—which was held at Vandalia City Hall—and explained the board is made up of 3 individuals and there are no elected involved in the board. The board says who is eligible for hire and makes the list, the Police Chief makes a decision and then the City Council approves the hire.
Fayette County Board Chairman Jacob Harris mentioned the possibility of the county joining in to have the current City Police Commission also handle for the county. Board member Pat Click suggested going from 3 to 5 members and adding two members from outside Vandalia City Limits. The matter was tabled but it is expected that Sheriff Stevens and Vandalia Police Chief Jeff Ray will discuss the matter further in the coming weeks.
