An individual addressing the Fayette County Board on Tuesday night during the Public Comment segment of the meeting led to a fairly long discussion on ambulance service for the county.
Kim Bouser from Rural Med EMS addressed the Fayette County Board on an issue that recently arose on social media. It was stated that an individual has raised the issue of it taking 3 hours for Rural Med EMS to respond on a call. But, Bouser explained the individual waiting was a transfer and the wait time was because the ambulances had emergency calls to respond to and they take first priority. Bouser said they had heard from the county board on the matter, to address the matter with the board. And, she stated they were also asked about their monthly calls and requests in the county. Bouser then went on to talk about Rural Med’s relationship with the Fayette County Board. She stated they have no contract or agreement with Fayette County and their only reimbursement comes from insurance. She stated that all other area counties they work with, such as Bond County and Effingham County, have some support.
Fayette County Board Chairman Jacob Harris says they appreciate all they do for the county. But, he says Rural Med shouldn’t be offended or hurt that a county board member is asking for call data.
And, Harris says as for some form of payment for the service, that should be up to the citizens.
Board Member Doug Knebel said he felt it wasn’t just about payment but having an exclusive agreement. And, Harris said he didn’t believe that was up to Fayette County.
And, Knebel reiterated the issue was more about Rural Med EMS having an exclusive contract.
Knebel also added the Fayette County Board does not have any control over what the Illinois General Assembly does. Harris also added he believed the original issue may have been blown out of proportion.
