(Springfield, IL) — A man accused killing an Illinois child welfare worker at a home outside Springfield is being found guilty but mentally ill. The decision was handed down yesterday by a judge in the trial of Benjamin Reed, who was charged with the murder of Deidre Silas in January 2022. Authorities say he stabbed Silas to death while she was checking on six children in a home in Thayer. Reed will be sentenced in November.
