The City of Vandalia is applying to try and get grant funding for downtown.
The grant the City of Vandalia is looking to get is the Rebuild Illinois Downtowns & Main Streets grant. The city had applied before back in late 2022/early 2023 and at that time they applied for funding for sidewalks, road resurfacing and water/sewer replacements on 5th and 6th Streets from the Railroad Tracks to Johnson Street.
City Administrator LaTisha Paslay says this time the city is again applying, but for a more limited pool of money and it was recommended to the City by the South Central Regional Planning & Development Commission to downsize their original project. The application will be for all the same items this time around, but instead will just be for 5th Street. If they would receive the grant, it would allow the City of Vandalia to take care of 5th Street in the same way they were able to take care of 4th Street. Paslay says the total estimated cost of the project is $2,218.710. The City is seeking grant funds of $1,664,032.50 and the City could provide local funds in the amount of $554,677.50.
