Freedom 14U OG softball took the championship of the Freedom Bats Out Tournament this weekend going 1-1 in pool play before a 3-0 run through bracket play on Sunday at Shed Field in Vandalia. After a tough 5-1 loss to Louisville (KY) Legends to open the tournament, Freedom bounced back with a 8-4 win over Shade Park Spirit out of Pekin, IL. After a 11-3 win over Freedom 14U Tassone in their first bracket game, Freedom got some revenge on Louisville Legends with a 6-2 semifinal win to earn their spot in the Championship game against the Renegades (Mt. Vernon, IL). Freedom OGs got on the board first with Lux Reynolds scoring on a RBI triple from Elaina Hagy for a 1-0 lead. The Renegades would tie the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning, but that tie was short lived as Freedom retook the lead in the top of the third inning. With runners at second and third, a single from Hagy scored Briley Sefton and Reynolds came home on the throw as Freedom took a 3-1 lead. Keira Meredith extended the Freedom lead in the fourth inning to 4-1 with a RBI double to score Katy Sefton and three batters later, Arian Dunaway scored on a passed ball for a 5-1 lead. A double from Violet Williams would score B. Sefton and a single from Anna Benhoff brought in Reynolds to push the lead out to 7-1 at the end of the fourth inning. With one out and bases loaded in the top of the fifth inning, Summer Sampson and Dunaway drew back to back walks to score Kenzie Stefanisin and K. Sefton as the Freedom lead grew to 9-1. A line drive double from Reynolds brought in both Sampson and Dunaway to tack on to the lead, 11-1. The Freedom closed out their scoring with two outs as Hagy reached base on a ground ball error as Reynolds scored to cap the lead at 12-1. Freedom would allow two Renegades baserunners in the bottom of the fifth inning, but after the pitching change, the Renegades would groundout, pop out and strikeout to end the game as Freedom took the 12-1 win and the Championship. After a tough 1-11 stretch to open the Spring/Summer season, Freedom 14U OGs have now won 7 of their last 10 games and four in a row.
