A Democratic lawmaker has introduced legislation that would ban natural gas in new buildings statewide. The bill’s sponsor, State Senator Celina Villanueva, calls her measure the Clean and Health Buildings Act.
There was pushback regarding the City of Chicago’s proposed ban of natural gas. Alderman Gilbert Villegas said it is much more expensive to heat a home with electricity.
State law requires Illinois to transition to 100% clean energy by 2050 and set timelines for coal and natural gas plants to stop operating.
