The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and the Vandalia Police Department both appear to be victims of “Swatting” following Saturday incidents.
Fayette County Sheriff Ronnie Stevens says the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a shooting in the village limits of Brownstown on Saturday. While responding to the address, the Vandalia Police Department received a report of a shooting. Sheriff Stevens says that subsequent investigations by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, the Vandalia Police, the St. Elmo Police Department and the Illinois State Police found that these were false reports and what is referred to as a “swatting” incident.
“Swatting” is defined as the action or practice of making a prank call to emergency services in an attempt to bring about the dispatch of a large number of armed police officers to a particular address.
