Cook County’s tax on guns and ammunition is still in place, but a case alleging the ordinance violates the Second Amendment has been revived.
The county brought about the $25 tax on guns and 1 to 5 cent tax on each cartridge in 2012. After a successful challenge made it to the Illinois Supreme Court, the county changed the ordinance. Gun rights advocate Todd Vandermyde and others then sued. In the district court, the case was dismissed. An appeals court reinstated the lawsuit this week. Vandermyde applauded the decision, saying it was a – quote “true smackdown” of the county’s arguments.
