An Illinois lawmaker wants to put an end to the flood of lawsuits against businesses as the result of the state’s strict biometric law. State Senator Bill Cunningham has filed legislation which would make changes to the liability guidelines in the Biometric Information Privacy Act, or BIPA. Cunningham wants to get rid of the “per collection” clause of the law, such as when fingerprint scans are collected. Phil Melin is the executive director of Illinois Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse.
Cunningham’s bill would limit the number of claims accrued under that scenario should an employee bring a lawsuit against a company for a violation of BIPA.
