The Vandalia Police Department dealt with an accident issue this past week.
Vandalia Police reports say that on this past Thursday night at 11:09 pm a Vandalia Police Officer observed an accident on Veteran’s Avenue in front of Los Amigos.
The Vandalia Police Officer’s report says that while patrolling the area of Veteran’s Avenue and 8th Street, the officer observed a vehicle with South Carolina plates sitting at the red light in the wrong lane. The officer says he observed the vehicle turn right on to Veteran’s Avenue and begin heading west. The Officer says in his report he began to follow and observed the vehicle start to accelerate and drift off the roadway. The officer says in his report he clocked the vehicle going 64 miles per hour in a 40 mile per hour zone. The Officer says that at this time he observed the vehicle collide into the rear of another vehicle, which was slowing down to attempt to turn into a business. The officer says in his report that he then observed the first unit drive across Veteran’s Avenue and crash into a ditch.
The officer says he then went to check on the driver, who was later identified as Elmer Y. Adonay. The officer says that Adonay exited the vehicle and began running on foot, then he jumped onto the ground and laid flat. The officer says that when he approached Adonay he was bleeding from the mouth. He also says he attempted to ask Adonay if he was OK and received no response. There was also a passenger in the vehicle and the officer says that it was learned both individuals are originally from Honduras and do not speak English. Rural Med arrived on the scene and all individuals were transported to Fayette County Hospital. The officer says he attempted to communicate with Adonay but was not able to, even with translators. The officer says that he observed Adonay and said his eyes were bloodshot and could smell alcohol on his breath. The officer says the Adonay was uncooperative and began giving hospital staff different names and dates of birth for himself.
Adonay was released from the hospital. He has been issued citations for: Reckless Driving, Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident, Improper Traffic Lane Usage, No Insurance, Driving 21 to 25 mph over the Speed Limit.
