It is back to the drawing board for Illinois’ two largest electric utilities after their proposed rate hikes and grid plans were shot down. The Illinois Commerce Commission rejected plans submitted by Ameren Illinois and Commonwealth Edison on how the companies would comply with the state’s Climate and Equitable Jobs Act. The commission’s decisions found that both utilities failed to sufficiently incorporate customer affordability into their proposals. Jim Chilsen is the communications director with the Citizens Utility Board.
The commission also said the grid plans did not outline how 40 percent of plan benefits will be directed to low-income and environmental justice communities. Both utilities are now required to file an updated grid plan within three months of the final order.
