Donald “Don” L. Bernhardt, 93, of Vandalia, Illinois, passed away Saturday, November 4, 2023, at SBL Fayette County Hospital LTC, in Vandalia, IL.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, November 10, 2023, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Vandalia, IL, with Pastor Brett Cornelius officiating. Burial with military rites will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery, Vandalia, IL. Visitation will be held from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM, Friday, November 10, 2023, one and a half hours prior to the service at the church. Memorials: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He was born July 9, 1930, in St. Peter, IL, the son of Walter H. & Matilda Bertha (Fischer) Bernhardt. He married Mary Jane Houck on November 11, 1956. He owned and operated Bernhardt’s Appraisal Service in Vandalia for many years, and founded Vandalia Real Estate; served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict; and was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Vandalia, IL.
He is survived by: Wife – Mary Jane Bernhardt, Vandalia, IL; Sons – Dr. Mark Bernhardt, New York, NY and John Bernhardt & Jodie, Chicago, IL; Granddaughter – Bailey Bernhardt, Nashville, TN; Brother-in-law – Gary Houck & Lynda, Murray, KY.
Preceded in death by: Parents; Brothers – Dean, Leroy, and Charlie Bernhardt; Sister – Wanda Tuft.
