(McHenry Co., IL) — A trial is underway for two former Illinois DCFS employees who were involved in the AJ Freund case. Carlos Acosta and his former supervisor Andrew Polovin each face charges of endangering the life of a child and reckless conduct. Both were involved in a 2018 investigation into allegations that five-year-old AJ had been abused. Acosta deemed the abuse accusation was unfounded after consulting Polovin. The pair were later fired from DCFS following AJ’s death in April 2019. The McHenry County boy was found in a shallow grave near Woodstock. Afterwards, investigators determined he had been abuse by his parents, who were both convicted and sentenced to prison.
