In the wake of news that nearly 40 Illinois state workers committed fraud in the Paycheck Protection Program, the investigation continues. The employees were accused in August of receiving PPP loans for businesses that did not exist. Governor J.B. Pritzker said the workers have been relieved of their duties.
Fourteen Chicago Public School employees, some making 6-figure salaries, also fraudulently obtained PPP loans. During a U.S. Senate Small Business Committee hearing, Iowa U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst said she is not sure the Small Business Administration is committed to going after PPP fraudsters.
Nationwide, more than $200 billion dollars of pandemic business loans have been deemed potentially suspicious.
