The City of Vandalia Water Department currently going through their Chlorine Burn.
Waterplant Superintendent Andy Gelsinger says the Water Department is starting the free chlorine conversion–or chlorine burn–from chloramine of the water system to help with extra disinfection and rejuvenation of the water system. Gelsinger says once they get the system flushed they will be converting it back to chloramines. He says that during the burnout process it is not uncommon for customers to notice a chlorine smell or taste. But, he says the water is safe for consumption and it is only temporary.
Gelsinger says the process is performed in order to maintain water quality. If this maintenance is not performed in the water distribution system the water will eventually lose all of its disinfection residual, which can cause water quality to degrade. The EPA recommends this process to be completed every year and it helps to clear up cloudy water, stagnant water, dead ends and other issues. He adds they will be flowing hydrants throughout the entire system but that all is fine throughout the system–this is just part of the process.
