Robert E. “Bob” McCart, 84, of Vandalia, IL passed away Monday, August 14, 2023 at his home, surrounded by family.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, August 18, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church, Vandalia with Pastor Curtis Flake officiating. Interment will follow in Fairlawn Cemetery, Vandalia. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9:00-11:00 AM, Friday, August 18, 2023, at the church. Robert Eugene McCart was born on February 12, 1939 at home, in Ramsey, IL. He married Barbara Jeanne (Witbracht) Clark on February 14, 1987; together they celebrated 36 years of marriage.
In his younger years, Bob began working at Northside Motors in the autobody department. He later owned and operated “Swamps” Auto Body and was often referred to as the “Master Auto Body Man”. While still working part time for Arthur Young, Inc and Nevinger’s Car Dealership, Bob was employed as a “Special Deputy” for Leonard Kelly, former Fayette County Sherriff. This led him to pursue a career as a Police Officer for the Vandalia Police Department in 1966. Bob was a Patrolman, then Detective Sergeant, before being appointed as Chief of Police; retiring in 2007. During his retirement, Bob worked many years as “Security” for bingo nights at the Crawford-Hale American Legion Post #95.
Bob had many hobbies throughout his lifetime. He had an avid love for hunting, fishing, bowling, horseshoes, motorcycle riding, golfing with friends, and all kinds of yardwork. Bob was a member of the Vandalia Country Club and attended the First United Methodist Church, Vandalia.
Mr. McCart is survived by his wife, Barbara McCart of Vandalia; daughters, Betty Maish (Randy) of Indiana and Mandy Pearson (Walt) of Vandalia; sons, Michael McCart (Lois) of Vandalia, Roddy Clark (Gina) of Worden, and Travis Clark (Kelly) of Vandalia; grandchildren, Greg Maish (Sherri) of Indiana, Derek Maish (Robyn) of Indiana, Veronica Forbis (Kirk) of Vandalia, Makale Pearson (Lauren) of Vandalia, Clark Pearson of Colorado, Trevor Clark of Vandalia, and Parker Clark of Vandalia; great-grandchildren, Elijah, Seraiah, Maciah, Lashah, Zephaniah and Jediah Maish, Fynneous, Lyris, Nova, and Truett Maish, all of Indiana, Braden Forbis, and Bodhi Pearson, both of Vandalia; brother, Bill McCart (Karen) of Indiana; sister, Candy Sivia (Eugene) of Vandalia; aunt, Anita “Sue” Smith of Vandalia; best friend, Fred Willms (Renee) of Vandalia.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Irene (Smith) McCart; uncle and aunt, Jack & Oma Alender, who helped raise him.
