As Tornado Alley expands, Illinois finds itself poised to break records for extreme weather in 2023. AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jonathan Porter said Illinois already has almost doubled its historical average of 54 tornadoes a year. Although not among the traditional Tornado Alley states, a distinction given to places like Kansas, Illinois has confirmed 97 tornadoes this year, resulting in one death and multiple injuries.
In no way is the threat over, with fall being notorious for an uptick in tornadoes. Porter said that could push Illinois to break the state’s 2006 record of 144 tornadoes.
Porter notes the storm track is getting a boost from warmer weather heating up the Gulf of Mexico, sending more tornadoes Illinois’ way.
