Artist Laureate and Fayette County native Kay Smith has donated a painting to the City of Vandalia.
The painting is the work of Kay Smith and is of the Vandalia Statehouse, with some other images added on the Statehouse lawn. Kay Smith’s daughter, Julia Smith, gave some biography on her Mother during a ceremony on Monday morning at Vandalia City Hall.
In 1994, Kay Smith was named Artist Laureate of Illinois by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois. Kay Smith turned 100 on February 27th of this year. That day was proclaimed as Kay Smith Day in Chicago by the Mayor’s office. Vandalia Mayor Rick Gottman says this is an outstanding gift.
Kay Smith was not able to be on hand, but Mayor Gottman is hoping to visit with her while in Chicago on business and Thank her for the gift. The portrait is now the property of the City of Vandalia and will be displayed at Vandalia City Hall. We’ll have more on the story coming up tomorrow.
