The Southern Illinois Lady Roughnecks 06 (16U) went 7-0 over the weekend and shutout four opponents on their way to claiming the Championship of the Father’s Day Frenzy Tournament in Jacksonville. In pool play, the Lady Roughnecks shutout the MSP Stars 7-0 for their first win, beat Elite Games 5-1 to move to 2-0 and wrapped up pool play with a commanding 19-0 shutout of Tribe Fastpitch.
In bracket play, the Lady Roughnecks picked up where they left off from pool play and got a first round win, 13-3, over the Adams County Aces before getting a quarterfinal win over the Mid-Illini Bandits, 3-0, to earn a spot in the semifinals. A 3-1 win over Lady Force would move the Lady Roughnecks into the tournament’s Championship game where they would get another shutout win, 6-0, over Southern Illinois Ruthless for the title.
The Lady Roughnecks pitching staff had an exceptional tournament, allowing just 5 runs (only 2 earned runs) on 11 hits with just 4 walks allowed and a 43 strikeouts. Mulberry Grove pitcher Lily Johnson pitched 10 innings and gave up just 1 run on 2 hits, allowing no walks and racking up 11 strikeouts as she picked up the complete game wins on the mound in the semifinal and championship games.
Mulberry Grove middle infielder Jenni Mezo and outfielder Lola Johnson each had strong tournaments as well on the offensive and defensive side of the ball for the Lady Roughnecks who will take their seven game win streak to Decatur on Saturday as they will take on the Lady Extreme out of Knoxville and the Mattoon Lady Cobras in the MTZ Mashup at Millikin University.
