14th seeded Kaskaskia College softball has pulled off a 1-0 upset over 3rd seeded Wallace State in their first game of the NJCAA D1 National Championship Tournament in Oxford, Alabama. The first round matchup for the Blue Angels turned into a true pitchers duel with KC pitcher Karlie McKenzie and Wallace State pitcher Katie Simon each going the distance with McKenzie showing allowing 0 runs while scattering 7 hits across her 7 innings of work while allowing no walks and striking out five. South Central grad and former Lady Cougar softball standout Sydnee Garrett didn’t have much of an opportunity to continue her hot hitting streak being walked in each of her first two at bats and went 0-1 on the day with a popout to 3rd base in her final at bat in the game.
With the win, the Blue Angels move into the second round of play in the championship part of the double elimination bracket and get set for a matchup with Grayson tonight at 6:00pm. Regardless of a win or loss tonight, KC will play again at Noon on Thursday. A win would have them facing either Seminole State or Florida Southwestern State in the championship bracket while a loss would have them taking on either Angelina or Eastern Arizona.
