Vandalia baseball picked up its first win of the season on Thursday, beating Cumberland, 8-5, on the road. Trailing 3-0, the Vandals would overcome their slow start and get going in the top of the fourth inning. With one out in the inning, Reid Well doubled to left field and was brought home to score on a double by Aiden Pollite. Carson Lotz kept the doubles coming with on of his own to score Pollite to bring the Vandals within one of the Pirate 3-2. After a walk by Aidan Jones to put runners at first and second, Lotz and Jones would each move up a base on a wild pitch to put two runners in scoring position. Cayden Hipsher singled to right field, scoring both Lotz and Jones to give the Vandals their first lead of the game, 4-3. Hipsher would steal second and then tag up and score on a sacrifice fly to left field by Chase McNary, pushing the Vandal lead to 5-3. After a scoreless fifth inning, the Vandals put another run across as Owen Miller doubled to left field to score McNary who had reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on an error. The run would put the Vandals up 6-3. Cumberland would cut the Vandalia lead to one, 6-5, with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Vandalia responded in the top of the seventh with two more runs on a single by Jones and a sacrifice fly by Hipsher to grab the 8-5 win. Vandalia is now 1-3 on the season and will be off until Monday when they will be at CHBC.
