South Central girls suffered a tough loss in their morning game of the Dieterich Girls Holiday Tournament on Tuesday morning but bounced right back for a big win in the afternoon. However, that morning loss would come back to haunt the Cougars as they would be forced into a tiebreaker to determine their final pool placing. In their first game, the Cougars would fall to Casey-Westfield. After taking a 13-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, South Central would find themselves down by just two, 29-27 at halftime. South Central would have a tough time scoring in the third quarter though, being outscored 12-4 and falling behind 41-31 heading into the fourth. The Cougars would make a late comeback and outscore the Warriors 20-13 in the quarter,, but it was not enough and the Cougars came up short, 54-51.
In their second game, the Cougars would take a 14-13 lead over Brownstown-St. Elmo after a quarter of play and push it to 24-19 at halftime. South Central would be outscored in the third quarter, 15-7, and find themselves trailing 34-31. The Cougars would go on an 18-12 run in the fourth though to pull out the 49-46 win and finish pool play at 1-2. That would put the Cougars into a tie with Casey-Westfield for third place in the pool behind BSE and Newton, but South Central would lose the tiebreaker to the Warriors due to losing to them in head to head competition. That means South Central drops to the fourth place finisher in the pool and will play in the tournament’s 7th place game at 1:00pm on Wednesday against Bridgeport Red Hill.
