St. Elmo-Brownstown volleyball will be hosting a Volley for the Cure match on Friday night as they host National Trail Conference opponent North Clay. While the annual matches across the state and the nation were originally started as a focus on breast cancer awareness due to October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, many have evolved to really encompass awareness for all cancers. For St. Elmo-Brownstown, they are embracing that evolution and calling their special night “Volley for the Cure – Fighting ALL Cancers”. SEB is encouraging attendees to wear shirts to support finding a cure for cancer, to honor those who are fighting cancer or have survived cancer or to honor the memory of those who have lost their battle to cancer.
One special part of the evening will be a luminary ceremony that will be held prior to the Varsity match. Luminaries are being sold now in honor of someone who has battled or is currently battling cancer or in memory of those who succumbed to their battle. The luminaries will be displayed while names are read and a moment of silence is held.
This year, SEB volleyball has chosen a recipient of the proceeds from the evening that hits very close to home for the team. Money raised will be donated to Joanna Redman, the mother of Eagles’ senior middle hitter Morgan Hall as Redman is currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Funds raised will go towards Redman’s medical expenses and needs.
Volleyball action for the evening will start at 5:15pm with a fresh/soph match followed by Junior Varsity at 6:15pm. The Luminary ceremony and other planned moments will be held after the JV match before the Varsity match will be played.
