Members of Illinois law enforcement community are speaking out against a new law taking effect Jan. 1 that eliminates cash bail under most circumstances. At a town hall meeting late last week, the Illinois Freedom Caucus focused on what the SAFE-T Act does, what it means for Illinois communities, and what citizens can do to repeal it. The town hall meeting included several Illinois lawmakers who make up the IFC and other state law enforcement officials and county judges. Macon County State’s Attorney Scott Rueter said that under the SAFE T Act, many criminals, even violent ones, would not be put in jail pretrial.
Effingham County Sheriff Paul Kuhns said the Act makes their job even more difficult.
The law goes into effect Jan 1 and removes cash bail and limits which individuals can be arrested and held jail until their trial.
