Altamont’s Grace Nelson is again a state champion.
At the Class 1A State Track Meet in Charleston on Saturday, Altamont’s Grace Nelson won the State Championship in the 100m Hurdles. Grace also took 2nd in the 300m Hurdles and took 3rd place in the 200m Dash.
Nelson came into Saturday’s Finals leading the field after running a :14.18 in the 100m Hurdles prelims and after a lengthy weather delay due to storms passing through the area on Saturday morning and afternoon, ran just slightly slower than that prelims time on a wet track with a :14.19 Finals performance to take the championship. In the 300m Hurdle race, Grace overcame a stumble on the fifth hurdle as she entered the front stretch to run a :44.81 and take second place behind Cambria Geyer of Tuscola. Nelson then wrapped up her day with a third place finish in the 200m Dash, running a :25.99, an improvement over her Prelims time of :26.45.
After just two seasons of high school track, the sophomore sprinter has now racked up two state titles, two second place finishes, one third place finish and an eighth place finish at the IHSA 1A State Finals.
