The City of Vandalia is in the process of applying for a 3 million dollar grant for downtown improvements.
The City of Vandalia held a public meeting prior to their regular meeting on Monday to discuss the potential grant application and have the City Engineers further explain the potential project. Lee Beckman says it would be for the area of 5th and 6th streets from the CSX Railroad to Johnson Street.
The grants are from the state’s Rebuild Illinois program and there will be 60 grants awarded out of a total of 95 million dollars. It was also pointed out the Governor is pushing for downtown revitalization and that the grants are for rural areas. The grant application is due by January 10th. And, if the city was awarded a grant it is not expected the funding would be available for 6 to 9 months and probably would mean the earliest the project would start would be spring of 2023. As for how much money the city would contribute, Mayor Rick Gottman did mention that TIF funds would qualify to be used for the project. Mayor Gottman says he and City Administrator LaTisha Paslay will work up a plan to present to the City Council at their January 3rd meeting.
